Tehrik-e-Taliban Mujahideen in Pakistans troubled tribal area of Mohmand Agency are currently in a stand off with the Pakistani army, awaiting the go order that is expected to be given to the Pak army at any moment.
Both sides appear ready for the pending battle. Emir Mualana Waji Ullah, speaking exclusively to JUS by telephone from an undisclosed location, described the situation in Mohmand Agency in detail.
The security situation is very tight. Behind the Frontier Corps, the Pakistani Army has three separate check posts set up at the Peshawar entrance to the Agency. Each vehicle traveling into the area is stopped and IDs are checked. Depending on identity cards, local residents are sent to their place or origin despite the fact that they may not be residing there. Further in, the Pakistani army is in battle formation on one side of the main road and the Mujahideen are in ranks on the other.
Asked about the condition of the fighters, Emir Ullah responded that the Brothers are well and we are ready for battle. Please keep us in your prayers.
The landscape of Mohmand Agency has changed dramatically in recent weeks due partially to an influx of fighters who are coming over the mountain range that separates Mohmand from neighboring Bajaur Agency. Bajaur continues in the throws of heated warfare, with the Pakistani Army and the Americans actively engaging the Mujahideen there. In Mohmand Agency, according to Mulvi Abdul Rehman, spokesman for the TTP in Mohmand, the population is 80% Taliban. Here fighters from Bajaur have been able to get rest and regroup as fighting in Bajaur enters its third month however that is expected to change once combat begins in Mohmand.
In addition, male relatives of local residents of Mohmand having been moving their families into the settled areas, most notably to Rawalapindi and Lahore before returning to the Agency to prepare for the battle that lies ahead. That effort has now been made even more difficult, due to increased security throughout Pakistan that has come on the heels of the Marriot bombing. These Taliban families are now being forced to relocate again to smaller villages in rural areas of Punjab and Sindh provinces.
JUS has now confirmed that Taliban fighters from Afghanistan are coming into both Bajaur and Mohmand Agencies in an effort to weight up forces in the battle that is raging in Bajaur and that is poised to break out in Mohmand when Americas newest addition to its puppets in Pakistan, General Kayani, gives the Pakistani army the go order in Mohmand Agency.
There are also unconfirmed reports that Abdul Malik, the principle of the Madrassa in the village of Qandara in Mohmand Agency who was so gracious to the JUS team during our last visit, has been arrested. No other details are available as we endeavor to confirm the report.
The Supreme Commander of Mohmand Agency Umar Khalid remains mobile and his current whereabouts is unknown. (JUS)
