We have forgotten our traditions: scholar

SHIMOGA: Vedic scholar Bannanje Govindacharya
regretted here on Monday that in "our over enthusiasm
to follow the British model of education we have
forgotten our glorious heritage and traditions."

Inaugurating the activities of the National Service
Scheme (NSS) at the Government Residential Women's
Polytechnic, he noted that students are not taught
real history but instead teaching has been restricted
only to the level of their (teachers) knowledge. He
said students would not be able to widen their horizon
unless they are enlightened about the cultural history
and social traditions.

He noted that attempts were being made by
"self-styled" intellectuals with little or no
knowledge about the country's culture and tradition to
deride them.

Stating that it was dangerous to blindly follow the
West, he asked students to develop reasoning and
inquisitiveness so that they would not accept
straightway whatever is thrown at them.

Commenting that today's education policy had laid
emphasis only on passing the examination, he said in
the process the need to find the truth was being
overlooked.

The Deputy Governor of the Rotary International
District 3180, S. Dattatri, was the chief guest.

The principal of the Polytechnic and President of the
Rotary Riverside Club, A.V. Katarki, presided over the
function. Nischita welcomed the gathering. Deepti
proposed a vote of thanks.

Govindacharya was felicitated.
