Forced to marry by rape, then divorced at whim

Mehrunisa is not of legally eligible age to marry. Yet five months ago she
was married off rather hurriedly. Not because she fell in love, but because
she was raped.

Her 21-year-old neighbour Shakir, who raped her, married her when the girl’s
family threatened to report him to the police.

Four months into the marriage, Mehrunisa signed on a blank ten-rupee stamp
paper. Her husband told her the signature was needed to transfer some
agricultural land into her name. The sign appended, he told her that she had
actually given her consent to the talaq (divorce), which he intended to get
printed on the paper.
